Starting from Londorossi Gate on the mountain's western side, you'll drive through the rainforest zone before beginning your hike at around 3,500m elevation. The Shira Plateau is a spectacular high-altitude moorland that was once a volcanic crater. The landscape here is otherworldly, with giant groundsels and lobelias dotting the heath zone, and dramatic views of Kibo peak on clear days. This hike is physically demanding due to the altitude and is best suited for fit individuals. It offers a taste of what Kilimanjaro climbers experience and serves as excellent acclimatization for those preparing for a summit attempt.
